Marketable Leadership
Competencies

Self-development is the ongoing journey and process where individuals evaluate their own lives, observe the personal growth they have experiences, and decide whether they are satisfied or not. It is known as the state or process of improving or developing oneself. I learned about self-development through my HDF 190 class, First-Year Leaders Inspired to Excellence (FLITE). For some outcomes from the inventory, it required a lot of reflecting on the college experiences I have had so far. Reflecting back to what I have accomplished and what I wished I accomplished, I think about my actions and the reasons for them. Along with this, I also tend to think a lot about how my strengths and values and how that played into the actions I carried out. By reflecting, I come to see how much I have grown as a person from just experiencing life. In life, self-development will continue to help me grow to be a stronger person and I will apply it towards my career as I go through pharmacy school. I can only imagine how hard pharmacy school will be, therefore I need to remember to pay attention to the insight and knowledge that I have gained throughout the past years and use it to understand the learning process and achieve my goals in a sustainable way.

Competency Area: Self-development

I first learned about productive relationships in my communications class when we talked about interpersonal communication. The prefix inter- means between, among, mutually, or together, and the word personal refers to a specific individual or particular role that an individual may occupy. Therefore, together interpersonal communication is communication between individual people, it is a process of exchange where there is desire and motivation from both parties to get to know each other as individuals. In my eyes, a productive relationship is a relationship between two individuals where a lot of good or useful things happen as a result of it. It is a relationship where each individual learns from the other one because they have had different experiences and therefore unique perspectives. In this interaction, the relationship is characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect. Through my time here at URI, I have been able to gain these competencies through collaborating with my professor and peers. This competency of productive relationships applies to my future career of being a pharmacist because I want to have productive relationships with my patients. Where they understand that I want for their health to be as optimistic as possible and that I will do everything in my power to accommodate any issues. Forming and carrying out productive relationships will only be beneficial towards the type of person I want to become in the future because I desire to have those relationships where I am able to absorb from their experiences and they are able to absorb from mine.

Competency Area: Vision

The purpose of strategic planning is to set long-range goals and to develop a plan to achieve them. This involves stepping back to figure out the pathways that should be taken and the main priorities. In a strategic plan, the vision tells you where you want to be in the future. The vision should be feasible and based on ambition but achievable targets in the end. I learned about vision in my communications class because I worked on a project focused on the mission statement of a company, where the vision was emphasized as part of the company’s mission. My vision in life is to become a pharmacist in the next five years who optimizes medication use and works with patients of all-ages to improve their health. My vision is the driving force to the type of person I want to become because I plan to work extremely diligently, while still enjoying my college journey.
